5 Tips To Make Your Moving Easier

5 Tips To Make Your Moving Easier

Here we are on the road to Moving Day… and boy, there is just so much to do. Moving is one of the most stressful events of a person’s life–there’s always something it feels like we’re forgetting!

If you’re getting ready to make a big change, then these 5 tips for making moving easier are meant for you! It’s time to get ahead of the stress and avoid the moving mess.

Schedule New Utilities

When you move to a new place, it’s important to schedule new utilities in advance so that you have electricity, gas, water, and internet services up and running when you move in. This will help you avoid any last-minute surprises and ensure that you can settle in comfortably. You can contact the utility companies in your area to schedule the installation of new services. It’s also a good idea to check if there are any promotions or discounts available for new customers.

Pack In Advance

Packing in advance can make the final weeks much less stressful. We recommend starting packing about 60 days before the actual move–this lets you spread it over a larger period and gives you ample time to declutter while you work. So start early and start with the things you won’t miss: knick-knacks on the mantel, out-of-season clothes, etc.  It may seem counterintuitive to pack sooner rather than later, but it makes a big difference.

Organization is Key

As you pack, don’t forget to organize your boxes! It might seem easier to fill a box up with whatever will fit, but mixing contents (especially from different rooms) can make the UN packing process a nightmare. Fill boxes with objects from one room only and write which room they belong in on the outside cardboard. Writing on multiple sides will also help you see each destination at a glance, no matter how it goes into the moving truck.

Pro Tip: have a numbering system for your boxes. Assign each box a number, write it on the outside cardboard, and keep a detailed inventory list handy. This will help you locate what you need in a pinch and unpack the most important boxes first. You can create the inventory list by hand in a notebook or online in a spreadsheet.

Keep Essentials Handy

Pack a bag with all the essentials you’ll need for the first few days in your new home, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents. This will save you time and energy searching through boxes for necessary items. You can also pack a separate box with kitchen essentials like plates, cups, and utensils so that you can prepare meals without having to unpack everything at once.

Utilizing an inventory system as suggested in #3 is also a great way to help yourself keep the essentials handy!

Book Licensed Professionals

Whether you’re hiring movers, electricians, landscapers, etc,, working with a licensed professional is a must! Moving comes with a slew of expenses so it may be tempting to just go with the cheapest option you can find; however, don’t sacrifice quality for money. Do your research, look at reviews, and trust resources like The Good Contractors List to help you find local, licensed professionals who will take great care of you.
